講 演 :「The mechanical and structural responses
of musculoskeletal tissues to weight bearing」

The musculoskeletal tissues (ligaments, tendons, muscle, cartilage and
bone) in joints all have weight bearing functions and are thus inherently
mechanical in nature. It is of no surprise then that these tissues have been
extensively studied by mechanical engineers for solving orthopaedic-related
problems. While mechanical engineering knowledge has contributed significantly
to the development of current musculoskeletal joint treatment methods, and even
tissue repair and regeneration, there is still much to learn about the
mysteries concerning the natural design of these important weight-bearing
tissue systems. One major obstacle, however, arises from the complex
hierarchical or multi-scalar nature of structure in biological materials that
tends to be ignored, or simply rationalized, in many biomechanical analyses of
joint and tissue systems. With musculoskeletal biomechanics, the important
scalar levels of interest would include whole-joint mechanics, tissue-level
micromechanics, fibrillar or ultrastructural nano-mechanics, and finally
cellular and/or protein level processes. In this lecture the speaker will
present and discuss data from experiments carried out in his research group
that illustrate how multi-scalar structural responses can be integrated in
various musculoskeletal tissues, healthy and degenerate, when subjected to
different loading conditions.
